Heartbleed Bug

What is it?

Heartbleed is a security bug in the open-source OpenSSL cryptography library that is used to implement the TLS protocol. The vulnerability is the result of a missing bounds check in the heartbeat extension.

What does it do?

The Heartbeat extension tests TLS secure communication by allowing one computer to send a “heartbeat request” message and then the receiving computer must send the exact same message back to the sender. Heartbleed is exploited by sending an incorrect request. Typically the sending computer would send a message “send back the four-letter word ‘hope’ and the server response would be ‘hope’. A malicious sender would send a message “send back a 700-letter word ‘hope’. The server would return ‘hope’ followed by 696 characters of the last items in the server memory. These characters can contain various types of information such as decryption keys, web traffic, or user information. The sender does not have control over what data is returned.

What has been done to remediate the problem?

Patches have been released for OpenSSL. However, the patches must be applied to each program running OpenSSL and those applications must be restarted. After the programs are patched all of the secured information should be replaced such as passwords or other personal information because it is not possible to know if the information has been compromised. Android version 4.1.1 (Jellybean) also has the bug and has not been patched.

What can you do?

It is difficult for an individual to protect themselves because of the nature of the exploitation. The issue is that if you change your password before a website has implemented a fix, you can still be vulnerable. There are some websites and browser add-ons that are currently available to check popular sites that have been fixed. Some sites also offer services that include secondary authentication. This process can be bulky but provides an additional security layer.
